Programme
Horizon Prevent is a preventive genetic programme by Horizon Genetic, built on AveGene technology. Through the analysis of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) it looks for genomic alterations associated with cancer — information that may contribute to recognising them earlier.
You choose a suitable panel, a simple blood sample is taken, the sample is analysed using AveGene technology following standardised procedures, and any variants found are assessed against internationally recognised classification frameworks. You can then discuss the results with your doctor and decide on any further steps.
Everyone’s blood contains short fragments of genetic information released by dying cells, circulating freely — collectively cell-free DNA (cfDNA). If cancer is developing in the body, some of these fragments may originate from tumour cells; that fraction is called circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA). It is in that fraction that the analysis looks for cancer-associated genomic alterations — from a single blood sample, with no procedure required.
AveGene offers several screening panels. Two are chosen most often. The Colorectal & Lung Cancer Screening Micro Panel provides focused coverage of 18 oncogenes associated with lung and colorectal malignancies. The Complex Genetic Cancer-Screening Test provides broad coverage of 55 oncogenes and more than 126 oncogenic parameters across multiple malignancies. Processing is identical for both; only the scope differs. Which one suits your situation is something we go through at the consultation.
Conventional screening methods examine one specific part of the body. ctDNA analysis in blood is not tied to a single organ, so from one sample it can provide information relating to malignancies in different tissues. It does not replace those methods, however — it complements them, and recommended screening programmes still need to be attended.
No. Horizon Prevent is a preventive programme designed to complement established screening and diagnostic procedures, not to replace them. It does not establish a diagnosis and does not replace a medical examination. The results serve as a basis for a consultation with a doctor.
The programme is intended for adults who want to pay attention to prevention. Whether it is suitable for you, and to what extent, is best discussed at a no-obligation consultation and subsequently with your doctor.
The price depends on the panel you choose. You will receive a specific quote at a no-obligation consultation, where we go through what makes sense in your situation. The consultation is free and comes with no commitment.
Sample and results
It is a routine draw of a small amount of venous blood, the same as for any other blood test. It takes a few minutes and is carried out by medical staff.
You will receive specific instructions in advance when your appointment is confirmed. In most cases nothing demanding is involved — it is an ordinary venous blood draw.
At an agreed collection point from our partner network. When you book, we will offer you locations that are convenient for you and arrange a time.
The sample is processed using AveGene technology within a quality management framework accredited to ISO 15189. The laboratory procedure, sequencing and bioinformatic evaluation all have predefined quality-control criteria, so the result does not depend on who processed the sample.
Processing time varies depending on the panel chosen and the laboratory’s current workload. We will confirm a specific date when you book and will let you know when the results have been sent.
We will send you the results through a secure channel as a structured report, together with an explanation of what the findings mean. We agree the method of delivery in advance, based on what suits you.
A positive finding does not mean you have cancer. It is a molecular signal that may warrant targeted evaluation using established diagnostic methods. We will pass the finding on to you together with an explanation and a recommendation on who to discuss it with; any further steps are decided by a doctor. You will not be left on your own.
It means the analysis did not detect the genomic alterations it looks for. However, this does not rule out disease and does not remove the need to keep monitoring your health, to attend preventive check-ups and to take part in recommended screening programmes.
Yes. Because it involves only a blood sample and the procedure is always the same, screening can be repeated at intervals and the results compared over time. It is worth discussing a suitable interval with your doctor.
